A group of weary but cheerful soldiers of the 2/8 Commando Squadron, attached to 3rd Australian Division, with an armed scout of the Papuan Infantry Battalion and a local boy, probably used for his knowledge of the rivers and jungle tracks. They appear to have recently returned to base from a successful long-range fighting patrol. Note the popularity of the Owen submachine gun, and Mills hand grenades, seen attached to chest packs of the squatting men. Bougainville Island. March 27 1945.
