The first Detroit Zoo was established in 1883 on Michigan Avenue, across the street from the former site of Tiger Stadium, when a circus went broke. Luther Beecher, a leading Detroit citizen and capitalist, financed the purchase of the circus animals and built this building to display the collection, calling it the Detroit Zoological Garden. The zoo closed the following year after financial problems, and the building was turned into a horse market. (The Detroit News)
