The Sufi poet Farid al-din Attar’s Conference of the Birds is a frame story whose central figure, a hoopoe, is a kind of spiritual leader for a number of other birds. This miniature (fol. 37 verso) is from one of the book’s explanatory anecdotes about how the devout Arab Sheikh Sanan falls in love with a Christian maiden from Rum (Byzantium). The turquoise and coral necklace with a big amulet "Gau", which is considered the main piece of jewellery in Ladakhi wedding. Then below that is an ornament worn by the women of Sham valley, its called "Rhuptsey". The top part is tied to the neck and the bottom part around the waist so that the lotus-shaped jewellery is right in the centre.
