De Havilland Comet 1952 114 The first production commercial jetliner, and built in Britain, the De Havilland Comet flew 50 per cent faster than the DC-6, while early passengers included Princess Margaret and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. BOAC was a key customer, flying in 1953 from London to destinations as far-flung as Johannesburg, Tokyo, Singapore and Colombo, but the Comet was temporarily withdrawn from service following a series of fatal accidents.
