Use wood scraps for outdoor blocks - talk to your local sawmill, wood yard, or arborist! Guaranteed they can hook you up if you explain what you're doing. This would be a wonderful idea for schools, playgrounds, etc. No reason you couldn't get the kids involved and even paint some of the "blocks" with non-toxic paints as well.
