Bullfighting was neither invented by the Portuguese or Spanish. It dates back to the Roman Empire and practiced in Lusitania (Roman Portugal), which the Lusitano is named after. Portuguese bullfighting differs in many ways from the Spanish, since it is done on horseback by Cavaleiros and is considered bloodless because no bulls are killed, since it was banned by Queen Mary II of Portugal in 1836. It was used to train horses for combat and showcase early forms of dressage.
