Abraham Stanyan, c.1710–1711, by Godfrey Kneller. In 1705 Abraham Stanyan was made envoy to Switzerland, where he served for nearly ten years, publishing a detailed and accurate Account of Switzerland on his return in 1714. Stanyan's final posting, from 1718 to 1730, was as Ambassador to Constantinople, now Instanbul. His successor Lord Kinnoull spent three months with him there, surviving daily feasts which he said 'almost kill'd me'.
