Ice Age Animals

Ice Age Animals - As the last great ice age (the fourth, or Wurm) began, the advancing ice of the Wurm glaciation forced tundra animals further south into western europe. The increasingly cold conditions altered the vegetation as well. The spruce, fir, and arctic willow were now found only in the more sheltered river valleys, while the rest of the landscape was mostly deforested.

An Irish Elk stands proudly in a dense forest. The Irish Elk, a.k.a. Megaloceros giganteus, is a mammal that went extinct rather recently (about 8000 years ago). It was almost certainly hunted by early humans and is depicted in many cave paintings. Despite it's name, it was not exclusive to Ireland nor was it closely related to elks. Rather, it was species of deer that ranged throughout Europe and parts of Asia.

IRISH ELK

I haven't told you about any extinct animals for a while, but today I am going to tell you about the Irish Elk. And the reason I picked this particular animal is because St. Patrick's Day will be here on Saturday, and I liked the idea of writing about an extinct animal that was Irish. Except that when I started doing my in-depth research on the Irish Elk, I found out that somebody really goofed when they gave it that name, because (1) it isn't an elk, and (2) it isn't even Irish! The…

Irish Elk

This week I’m bringing you another request, and apologizing for the delay in EPIC creatures. A death in the family kept me from my work for a few weeks, but it’s good to be back! This creature is actually a deer (the Irish Elk is also called Giant Deer) with the largest antlers (compared to its size) ever discovered, I guess you could say it has a nice rack! It once lived with early man, two common beliefs of why it went extinct is that we over-hunted it and that the antlers got so big that…
