Helene Arpels 1939 | Born in Monte Carlo to Russian parents, Hélène Ostrowska was a fashion model whose elegance and grace had made a powerful impression on Paris and New York’s society. In 1933 married Louis Arpels. After WWII, they crossed the Atlantic when the Arpels family established Van Cleef & Arpels’ New York branch.

Van Cleef & Arpels has revealed their 2018 high jewellery collection in Paris this week, in which it celebrates its love for poetry and dreams. Entitled "Quatre contes de Grimm", the French house reinterprets four tales by the Brothers Grimm, "The Twelve Dancing Princesses", "The Golden Bird", "The Three Feathers" and "Town Musicians of Bremen".

The Van Cleef & Arpels brooch displays a stunning array of the original vivid red faceted Burmese rubies and white diamonds set in Paris . The vibrant gems are set in a 35 mm round platinum pin to form a flower motif. Oval and pear-shaped rubies with 5 carat total weight, and baguette and round-cut diamonds, with 5 carat total weight. Works from the 1930s are characterized by jewels in primary colors designed in a geometrical pattern, with a streamlined style.
