PLOT:  A freewheeling Detroit cop (Murphy) pursuing a murder investigation finds himself dealing with the very different culture of Beverly Hills.

Sylvester Stallone was originally considered for the part of Foley and rewrote the screenplay, removing nearly all of the comedy elements.  He would eventually depart and would turn the script into the violent cop movie "Cobra" in 1986.
