Venice: The Mouth of the Grand Canal from the East; and The Molo, with the Piazzetta and the Doge’s Palace, from the Bacino.
The figure of this portrait is seated in a simple chair in an interior (which is Blanche’s studio in Auteuil) that is executed in quick, broad brushstrokes so as not to detract from the sitter. She looks straight out at the viewer; however, her head is tilted slightly to one side, as if she has just asked a question and is waiting to hear the answer. 🔔British and European Art: London | Live Auction: 14 December 1PM GMT.

Miranda from The Tempest was Waterhouse’s first depiction of a heroine from Shakespeare's play. In 1875, he painted what is believed to be his first version of Miranda. In both style and composition, the present lot bears similarity to the 1875 painting. Both depictions present Miranda sitting on a rocky outcrop, in classical dress. 🔔British and European Art: 13 July, London.

Landscape Paintings

Landscape, as a subject in its own right, forms only a small part of Rembrandt’s printed oeuvre, comprising 25 etchings and drypoints created over a period of twelve years, between 1640 and 1652. In these prints Rembrandt largely eschewed the dramatic chiaroscuro seen in his paintings of the previous decade in favour of a more fluid, spontaneous execution - an approach to landscape also very much in evidence in his drawings at the time. The exception is The Three Trees, which is the largest and most ambitious landscape composition and a tour-de-force of the effects of light and shade.

This exceptional pair of views of Venice by Canaletto, painted in around 1734
The pictures depict the Molo from the Bacino di San Marco and the mouth of the Grand Canal from the east. Understandably, both were, and remain, among the most evocative of Venetian subjects. ⁣ ⁣ Canaletto never repeated his compositions, but like musicians of his time knew how to vary them, shifting an angle of vision and varying the types and positions of the vessels that contributed so signally to his sense of recession. ⁣ ⁣ 🗓 Old Masters Part I: 7 December Live Auction 2.30PM GMT.⁣
