The Yanomami are a group of indigenous people who live in some 200–250 villages in the Amazon rainforest on the border between Venezuela and Brazil. They are one of the indigenous groups that still live in traditional ways. This is because they were isolated from the rest of the world, in the middle of the Amazon rainforest for thousands of years.

As many as 80 Yanomami Indians have been killed in a "massacre" carried out by unauthorized gold miners from Brazil, leaving charred remains of a community and polluted rivers in its wake.
