Start of the 1968 Sebring 12 Hour
I can't help but smile seeing this vintage photo from the start of the 1968 Sebring 12 Hour race. After the LeMans style start cars coming down the front straight three and four abreast. David Hobbs in a Gulf GT40, Ludovico Scarfiotti in a factory Porsche 907, Allan Moffat in a Shelby Mustang, Scooter Patrick in the Lola and so on. Also in that mix are Pedro Rodriguez and Hap Sharp driving Corvettes plus many, many more. What can you say, this was the golden age of endurance racing. BTW…

Bob McLean's ill fated GT40 at Sebring 1966
Bob McLean and Jean Ouellett drove this Ford GT40 at Sebring in 1966. The car failed to finish due to a fatal accident involving McLean. According to witnesses the car, which had just been refueled, suffered a mechanical failure and veered off the track hitting a telephone pole. It immediately burst into flames and McLean perished in the car. In fact Sebring 1966 was a bad day at the races as Andretti suffered locked rear wheels due to transmission problems in the NART Ferrari 365P2 and…

Sebring 1971 - What a way to end a race.
The Gregory - Young Ferrari 512M goes off course and hits a sand bank at Sebring in 1971. The car would flip on its top and catch fire. The driver was rescued by the corner workers but the car was too damaged to continue. Photo contributed by Michael Keyser.
The Start of the 1957 12-Hours of Sebring
They sprinted across the track and into their cars for the start of the 1957 12-Hours of Sebring. the #71 car is an Arnolt Bolide, #28-29-30 are all Ferrari 500 TRC's. Interesting to see that a Triumph TR3 got the jump on the larger displacement cars. Photo courtesy of Robert Johns.
Back in the day...the start of Sebring 1955.
That's an Excalibur J coming first under the start/finish line at the 1955 12-Hours of Sebring. The car was driven by Jim Feld and Bob Ballenger and finished 28th. The #2 car is a Nash-Healey Le Mans that was driven by Andy Rosenberger and Charles Cowdin but they failed to finish. Please study the photo carefully. Note the photographer on the left just a few feet from the race traffic. And, look at those fellows on top of the big sign with no safety railing. Those were the days.
1966 Sebring 12 Hours
Dan Gurney and Jerry Grant drove this Ford Mk II at Sebring in 1966. They were leading the race at the end when their engine quit on them while Gurney was driving. With just minutes left Gurney decided to push the car to the nearby pits and gets disqualified. If he had left the car where it stood they would have finished second. Gurney knew better but decided to push the car down pit road to the pits with thousands cheering him on. The Porsche 906 following Gurney finished 8th overall. It…
Stirling Moss in the lead at Sebring 1960
The great Stirling Moss (now Sir Stirling) leads the race in his Maserati Tipo 61 during the 1960 12 Hours of Sebring. In this photo he has exited the Webster turns ahead of the Porsche 718 RS 60 of Bob Holbert, Roy Schecter and Howard Fowler. Moss's co-driver was Dan Gurney. Despite leading for most of the race Moss and Gurney had to retire the car due to rear end and transmission problems. The Porsche in the photo finished second behind another Porsche driven by Hans Herrmann and Oliver…

The winning works Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa 58 of Phil Hill and Peter Collins leads the works Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa of Mike Hawthorn and Wolfgang von Trips through what looks like the infamous hairpin turn at Sebring 1958. The #15 Ferrari failed to finish but another works Ferrari driven by Luigi Musso and Oliver Gendebien came in second. IMRRC photo.
Oops, Sebring 1972
The #2 winning Ferrari 312 PB of Mario Andretti and Jacky Ickx (driving) passes the Chevy Camaro of Roberto Quintanilla and Jose Martinez. The Camaro was going a little too fast coming under the MG Bridge and ended up in the sand bank. They failed to finish. Take another look at the MG Bridge. It was in such poor shape that it collapsed during a storm not long before the 1973 Sebring race. The FIA pulled its sanction of the 1973 Sebring race due to the terrible condition of the Sebring…
