A japanned tray - Bilston mainly japanned on plate metal, not papier mache. The town made vast numbers of blank trays, many of which were sold on to Wolverhampton japanners. Japanner- A specialty of Bilston and Pontypool is a method whereby tin-plated sheets of iron are fused to several layers of varnish based coal tar to give the appearance of that in fashionable oriental lacquered furniture. Used mainly for trays or snuff boxes etc.

The town of Bilston in south Staffordshire – traditionally associated with metalworking crafts including the production of buckles, hinges and boxes – already had a sizable enamelling industry when Louis XIV’s revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685 saw a new wave of Huguenot refugees settle in the area. This new pool of talent led to a boom in business, and 18 enamelling workshops were registered in Bliston by 1760.
