In literal terms, the zoot suit was a largely oversized pair of suit pants tightly cuffed at the ankles matched with an equally exaggerated suit jacket (with an oversized lapel and fitted cuffs.) The suit was worn mostly by young people throughout the thirties when the jitterbug became a popular dance, but was declared wasteful when the L-85 standards were enacted. Seemingly unpatriotic, the suit began to symbolize criminals and members of gangs.
