He won the 100-meter race in 9.99 seconds, jumped 28 feet1/4 inch to win the long jump, led a U.S. sweep of the 200-meter, and anchored the U.S. team that set a new world record with its win in the 4 × 100 relay.

Lewis won four gold medals — in the 100 and 200 meters, long jump and 4 x 100 meter relay — at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Lewis won subsequent gold medals in the long jump over the next three Olympics (1988, 1992 and 1996), adding another in the 100 meters in 1988 and in the 4 x 100 relay in 1992.
