Lt. J. B. Washington and Second Lt. George Custer. This picture was taken after Washington was captured as a Confederate prisoner. Washington and Custer were ex-classmates and friends. Custer is best known for The Battle of Little Bighorn, aka “Custer’s Last Stand,” part of the Great Sioux War. Custer lost his life and his regiment suffered a severe defeat.
