Cro-Magnon's body was generally heavy and solid with a strong musculature. The forehead was fairly straight rather than sloping like in Neanderthals, and with only slight browridges. The face was short and wide. Cro-Magnons had a prominent chin. The brain capacity was larger than the average for modern humans. However recent research suggests that the physical dimensions of so-called "Cro-Magnon" are not sufficiently different from modern humans to warrant a separate designation.

So Why Don't We Still Call Them Cro-Magnon? The more we learn about early modern humans, the less we feel confident about the early classification systems we developed more than 130 years ago. The term Cro-Magnon doesn't refer to a particular taxonomy or even a particular group located in a particular place. The word is not precise enough, and so most paleontologists prefer to use Anatomically Modern or Early Modern Humans.

The current love of Neanderthals gets out of hand sometimes. This excellent reconstruction of a pretty Neanderthal girl has hair a rock star would be proud of. Rather than parted and fluffed, Neanderthal hair was probably matted, greased, painted, hacked short or some combination of these. Are we even sure it grew continuously? or was it more like fur? Not knocking Neanderthal coiffures. Cro Magnon hair was probably distastefully unmodern as well.

'Neanderthal girl,' the new song and music video from Shakira, lol!
