November 19, 1863: President Lincoln speaks at Gettysburg. Weak, dizzy, and haggard, the President spoke for only 2 minutes, in a speech now regarded as one of the finest in the English language. Lincoln was ill for some time afterwards, and may have been suffering from a mild case of smallpox. This is the only known photograph of Lincoln on that day. He is the figure highlighted in sepia.
