The Big Red One--the 1st Infantry Division--set up a box perimeter defense of the crucial crossroads town of Butgenbach on the north shoulder of the Bulge salient. For two weeks, the 26th Infantry Regiment held the town against repeated German assaults. The American troops withstood the best of the German Army and fought off elements of the 1st SS Panzer Grenadiers. This photo was taken on December 17, 1944 at Butgenbach as the 1st ID moved to take up positions to repel the German thrust.

The New York Ontario & Western station at Cleveland was located on the northern division on the north shore of Oneida Lake.  I'm not sure when this photo was taken, and it was never mailed, but it looks to be around the late 1940's or early 1950's.  I believe it was Cleveland that had a glass factory at one time which would have been out of view at right.  More information on this photo, and station would be great.  The O & W was abandoned March 29, 1957.

Whichard and David Jordan Whichard began publishing The Eastern Reflector, in Greenville, North Carolina, on January 26, 1882.
