18-year-old Holy Protomartyr and Equal-to-the-Apostles Thecla of Iconium (1st cent. AD) refused to marry her wealthy fiance because she heard Apostle Paul's teachings. Sentenced to the stake, Christ appeared, extinguishing the flames with a downpour. Romans then unleashed wild animals and tried to trample her with oxen, but none would harm her. At the age of 90, pagan sorcerers were after Thecla, so she prayed and a hill opened, hiding her from attackers and commending her soul to the Lord.
