"When it all goes wrong": the USS Iowa turret explosion, 19th April 1989. Firing 16 inch shells, requires tremendous firepower. Each shell was packed with "cordite charges" behind, which would explode in the gun barrel, and propel the shell forwards. Unfortunately, working inside a gun turret, has always been regarded as a "dangerous job". Here the very armour, that is designed to safeguard a battleship, and prevent it sinking; also doomed the sailors that worked inside, her "B" gun turret.
