Howard Hughes 1938 Howard Robard Hughes, Jr. (December 24, 1905 – April 5, 1976) was an American business tycoon, entrepreneur, investor, aviator, aerospace engineer, inventor, filmmaker and philanthropist. During his life, he was known as one of the most financially successful individuals in the world.
Howard Hughes attempted to land his experimental XF-11 plane on the golf greens at the Los Angeles Country Club but he didn't make it. Instead, he smashed into a home in Beverly Hills destroying the plane and burning down the house. Hughes somehow survived the crash, but was badly injured. He became addicted to opiates during his hospital recovery, and grew his trademark mustache to cover a scar on his lip that he received from the crash.
