Hyder Ali, sided with the French following the annexation of lands belonging to one of his dependents by the British. His 90,000 strong army defeated a British-Indian force at Parambakum on 10 September 1780. Sir Eyre Coote was then sent against Hyder Ali with a larger force. He defeated him at Porto Novo on 1 July and Pollilore on 27 August 1781. Coote was again victorious at Sholinghur on 27 September 1781, but the war dragged on with neither side able to claim a decisive victory.

In 1751 Hyder Ali rose into limelight after, the Trichnopoly campaign and he was appointed as the faujdar of Dindigal. As a Faujdar Hyder Ali imparted European training to his army.

Tipu Sultan (1753-99) was born in Devanahalli, Bangalore. He took over after his father Hyder Ali in 1782 during the Second Anglo-Mysore war. Tipu won the war and ruled over Bangalore till 1799. He died fighting in the fourth Anglo-Mysore war. Tipu was a learned person and an able administrator. He built a library containing about 2000 books in Arabic, Persian and Indian languages.
