Ypres Tower built in the 12th century by Henry III. It was part of the defence against the frequent raids by the French, Cinque Port of Rye, East Sussex. Cinque Ports are five historic costal towns in Kent and Sussex. They were originally formed for military and trade purposes. The name originates in Norman french meaning five ports which are, Hastings, New Romney, Hythe, Dover and Sandwich (photo by me)
