The violence and physical abuse suffered is only one side of the spectrum. The wounds will heal - it's the memories, loss of trust, anger, helplessness and psychological trauma which never can be erased. On the other side of the spectrum is the damage caused by manipulation, mind-games, fear, gas-lighting, humiliation and psychological violence. The latter aspect is no less destructive.
