Gates of Paradise The sculptor Lorenzo Ghiberti worked for 27 years to finish the East doors of the baptistery. They depict famous scenes from the Old Testament. Ghiberti employed the recently discovered principles of perspective to give depth to his compositions which today - 500 years later - are among the most heralded pieces of art in Florence.

Lorenzo Ghiberti's cast gilt-bronze "Gates of Paradise" at the Florence Baptistery in Florence, Italy, combines high-relief main figures with backgrounds mostly in low relief.

Artists Renaissance: Lorenzo Ghiberti (1378-1455) goldsmith, sculptor, and architect, author, and art critic. He is best known for the Gates of Paradise (1425-52) on the Baptistery of the cathedral of Florence.  This is his St.Stephen on the facade of Orsanmichele in Florence (1428).
