Good to Know: Re-do honey oak (wooden or laminate) cabinets or furniture with General Finishes Java Gel Stain (absolutely NO substitutions for this brand!) No brushing! Wipe gel stain and gel poly on with mens white sock.
Found on a chat board: I transformed my good condition builder grade oak cabinets just last year. Now they are a dark espresso. I spent roughly $250 for the kitchen and three bathrooms - and some sweat equity of course. I used General Finishings Java Gel Stain. I do have some light spots on some of the kitchen doors - the key is to do light sanding - I think I over-sanded. I hand sanded the bathrooms and they turned out better. The green wall color is coming down this year.
.sanded to barewood...refinished with general finishes antique white milk paint on the base/legs...hand waxed with a clear wax....top of table has been redone with general finishes java gel and two coats of matte poly for protection but matte so that there isn't a sheen and you can see the gorgeous detail of wood grain and the dark and light spots of the wood etc
This desk is a vintage writing desk. I painted it a white that has the slightest hint of red on the inside. The whole things was covered in Minwax matt finish and that little black spot is chalk board paint. The red is Pittsburgh "Gumball" red and I used Rustoleum Java glaze for a hint of antiquing on the red. The stain color is Minwax Gel Dark Walnut.
