US Occupation authorities classified Watanabe as a war criminal (23rd on list of 40 most wanted) for his mistreatment of POWs, but he managed to evade arrest and was never tried in court. Watanabe's prisoners nicknamed him "The Bird". Accusations about Watanabe's abusive behavior are given in Laura Hillenbrand's book about American track star Louis Zamperini titled Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption
