Pim Fortuyn was a Dutch politician who formed his own list (Lijst Pim Fortuyn) and was shot to death by Volkert van der Graaf in 2002 during the national election campaign because of his beliefs. The assassination shocked many residents of the Netherlands and highlighted the cultural clashes within the Netherlands. Pim Fortuyn was labeled as a far-right populist, and had a strong opinion about Muslims and Islam itself. Furthermore, he was a Catholic and openly gay.
