Mike Powell during the Long Jump event at the 1991 IAAF World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. In an epic showdown with Carl Lewis, whose fourth round wind-assisted jump of 8.91 metres was part of a series that included four attempts over 8.83 metres, Powell unleashed a legal fifth round effort of 8.95 metres to break Bob Beamon's 23-year-old World Record by 5 centimetres and be crowned World Champion. In the 23 years since, no one has come within 20 centimetres of Powell's record.
Track & Field: 1984 Summer Olympics: USA Carl Lewis runs to victory at the 100 meters during the 1984 Summer Olympics. Lewis won four gold medals — the 100m, 200m, 4x100m relay and long jump - during the Los Angeles games.
