Shimogamo Shrine, Kyoto, Japan: photo by William Corey. My niece spent a year in Kyoto and speaks fluent Japanese. I was born on the Japanese Riukan Islands in Okinawa. I guess you could say I was literally "made in Japan!"

Shimogamo Shrine in Japanese, is the common name of an important Shinto sanctuary in the Shimogamo district of Kyoto city's Sakyō ward. Its formal name is Kamo-mioya-jinja. It is one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan and is one of the seventeen Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto which have been designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

SHIMOGAMO SHRINE is one of the two Kamo-jinja (Deity Shrines) intended to protect Kyoto from malign influences. Of the two Deity Shrines, Shimogamo & Kamigamo, Shimogamo is the older, dating to the 6th century, centuries before Kyoto became the capital of Japan. In addition, the shrine name references the area's early inhabitants, the Kamo clan, many of whom continue to live near the shrine their ancestors traditionally served.
