May 12th 1918 HMT Olympic was carrying U.S. troops to Cherbourg, France when she sighted the surfaced U-boat 103 which quickly began to crash dive to 30 meters as the Olympic’s gunners opened fire. The Olympic then rammed into the sub just aft of her conning tower, while her massive 3-bladed port wing propeller sliced through the boat's pressurized hull. U-103 blew her ballast tanks and was abandoned by her crew. Olympic remains the only ocean liner in history to sink an enemy submarine!

This is a Latécoère 298 belonging to Escadrille de Torpillage T2 which force landed at Boisjean. So dire was the situation at the end of May that this slow and vulnerable torpedo floatplane was thrown into dive-bombing and strafing the advancing german columns, with predictable results: they were decimated.
