The hotel opened around 1900 in a grand new building raised on the site formerly occupied by the original Hotel d’Angleterre. While its front entrance was facing the Ezbekiyya Garden, the back door let out onto Wagh al-Birket, a notoriously street full of brothels. Now you see the corner building on modern Khazindar Square, across from Sednaoui department store. The building today is in a wretched state, but still with its arcaded pavements and low-rise, Italianate architecture Brothel, Palace Hotel, Front Entrances, Back Doors, Pavement, Department Store, Low Rise, Egypt, The Past

A Nilometer is a structure for measuring the Nile River's water level during the annual flood season. The simplest nilometer design is a vertical column submerged in the waters of the river, with marked intervals indicating the depth of the water. One that follows this simple design, albeit housed in an elaborate and ornate stone structure, can still be seen on the island of Rhoda, Cairo which dates as far back as AD 861. Conical structure covers the nilometer on southern tip of Rhoda Island Nile River, Submerged, Cairo, Kaleidoscope, Flood, Elaborate, Column, Simple Designs, Annual
