I had a clay allotment and I spent hours doing my back in digging heavy sticky soil. Thankfully those days are long behind me. No dig makes starting a new veg garden so much easier. For more info on no dig check out @charles_dowding and his amazing no dig veg garden. The thick card starves weeds of light which causes them to die, so can be done directly on grass. But the card still breaks down quickly enough that roots from plants above - such as seeds or plug plants that you plant - can grow down through the card into the soil below. Traditional digging brings a lot of weed seeds to the surface where they germinate but no dig buries them deep in the soil where many will never germinate. The mulch on top is rich organic matter that improves the structure and nutrients of the soil, rather than digging it in in the traditional way, no dig lets natural processes from worms, roots and microorganisms in the soil to draw the organic matter down gradually over time. I've planted 3 varieties of gooseberry Hinnonmaki Green, Red and Yellow for a range of different coloured fruits. If you've only ever had sour unripe gooseberries that you can buy in the shops then I promise you growing your own will be a revelation.
