Linen ‘makrama’ (embroidered napkin); also used in Thrace and northwestern Anatolia as festive ‘önlük’ (apron) by women. From the Marmara region, 2nd half of 19th century. The ‘two-sided’ embroidery (identical on both sides of the fabric) is executed in both multi-coloured silk and ‘tel kırma’ (motives obtained by sticking narrow metallic strips through the fabric and folding them). (Inv.nr. brdw042 - Kavak Costume Collection - Antwerpen/Belgium).
