TV studio, circa 1966. Two RCA TK 42 color cameras. I find vintage TV studio equipment to be really beautiful. The images transmitted from TV studios of the day played a big part in influencing the public taste and saturating the country with the MCM aesthetic.

It’s funny to remember how large, bulky, yet sometimes stylish televisions were before the era of HDTVs took displays from the floor onto our walls. We still remember our childhood 80’s RCA floor console TV taking up about the same amount of room as 40″ HDTV flat panels all lined up. Sometimes you’ll still find one of these wonderful relics of TV’s past in basements, garages or thrift stores, many not in working order.

Pt. 4 In 1940 a man by the name of Peter Goldmark invented a mechanical colored television set based on the designs of John Baird’s plans from 1928. It was authorized by the FCC, Federal Communications Commission, and declared a “national standard” in October of 1950 even though there were some problems with the early designs. While these new television sets were bulky and were not compatible with the earlier black & white sets, CBS began public broadcasting in 1951 on the East Coast.
