Simple Biology & Medical Notes

Simple cuboidal epithelia contain single layered, square shaped cells with larger volume than squamous cells. This is good for storing organelles and aids in secretions and absorption, and a production of mucus coat. This epithelia can be found in the liver, thyroid, mammary, salivary and other glands.

Areolar tissue (loose fibrous connective tissue) are characterized by lots of ground substance (more space, less fibers). It contains collagen and elastic fibers, fibroblasts, and numbers blood vessels. It can be found underlying almost all epithelia (providing nutrients from blood vessels to epithelia) , around blood vessels, esophagus, trachea, etc. It functions to loosely bind epithelia to other tissues, immune function, and allows passage for nerves/blood vessels.

Nerve tissue is specialized for chemical and electrical communication and consists of neurons and supporting cells, called glial cell. Glial cells constitute most of the volume of nervous tissue. They protect and assist neurons by communication, but do not transmit long-distance signals. See chapter 12 for more detail on neurons and glial cells.
