The North American least shrew has an incredibly fast metabolism and must eat 60 to 100% of its own body weight every day to survive! It is one of the smallest mammals growing to be only around 3 inches long, and also one of the few that have venomous saliva. Though it is sometimes mistaken for a mouse, it is not a rodent but a member of the order Soricomorpha, the shrews and moles.
