an open notebook with some drawings on it

In January 2011, a blog named Fussy Cut, was doing a quilt along based on the book, The Farmer's Wife. The goal was to complete two blocks every week. In 1922, The Farmer's Wife magazine posed this question to their readers: "If you had a daughter of marriageable age, would you, in light of your own experience, have her marry a farmer?" The magazine at that time had 750,000 subscribers, and received over 7,000 letters. The best answers to this question are included in this book, along with…

an old quilt hanging on the side of a building

Finished at last, finished at last, thank you thank you, it's finished at last! I began sewing the Farmer's Wife quilt in April of 2011. One of my earliest posts, dated December 1, 2011, was about this quilt. Slowly and steadily, over more than three years, I sewed all 111 of the 6.5" blocks that make up this quilt. More than a dozen, I sewed twice, because the templates that come with the book didn't make the blocks finish at the correct size. Thanks to Karen of High Country Quilts, and…

several pieces of paper cut into squares on a cutting board with yellow lines in the background

I seriously considered ditching the templates and working out the math for each block as I go along. I love math, and I know that my work is more accurate when I rotary cut my pieces. But I wanted to keep in the spirit of this project, so I'm using the templates from the book. I hand pieced and quilted my first quilt using templates, so this process isn't new to me. This time around, I am using my rotary cutter to cut around the templates and I'm machine piecing my blocks. I thought I'd…

a bed with a quilt on it next to a wooden headboard and foot board

Hey everybody!! I finished the Farmer's Wife Quilt this past week! Here it is in all its giganticness in my driveway, being held up in -20 degree weather by my husband (6 feet, 1 inch tall) and my 19 year old son (6 feet, 3 inches tall) and standing on blocks of wood. This quilt was conceived in 2011 while on a trip with my sister to Seattle. We stopped in a quilt shop, we stopped in a book shop and I found a jelly roll of Kansas Troubles Perennials and a copy of The Farmer's Wife Sampler…
