Embroidery is supercute, but many of us can't afford an embroidery machine or want different designs from the one you can purchase. Embroidery (or free motion appliqué) can add a personal twist to your purchased wardrobe and it can easily theme your next sewing project. All you need is a bit of inspiration and excercise... the more you try the better your outcome will look! Free motion embroidery, free motion sewing, or raw edge applique allows you to turn one your favourite pictures or sketches in a piece of fabric art. This technique provides you with full control over the picture - by dropping the feed dogs on your machine you guide your picture through your sewing machine to create the look you want. For your background fabric, choose something firmly woven such as calico, cotton or even linen.

Yesterday, I practiced free motion scribble stitching around some scrappy fused flower patches. Stitching with black thread was scary, but now after stitching a dozen flowers, I think I'm getting the hang of it. I was prepared to do my practice stitching and throw away my samples, but I really like them. So next week, I'll make them up into little zippered pencil cases. Stay tuned. Want to try it yourself?
