The handkerchief is a token of Desdemona's faithful marriage to Othello. Embroidered with red strawberries, it resembles blood stains on their first night of love-making. Since it is the Othello's first gift given to her, she holds it dear to her and carries it almost everywhere she goes. When this lovely handkerchief later comes to Lago's possession, it is used, ironically, as evidence of Desdemona's adulterous behavior.
