What Happens in the Tidepools Stays in the Tidepools
This is a version of a shot I posted on Flickr last year. This one has slightly less water movement. Such an amazing location on the wild West Coast! This shore platform extends a long way out towards the sea stacks. A little scary being out there with the waves crashing all around and no hope of easy retreat! I went back more recently but the starfish were gone. Evidently they consume all the sea weed and algae in a particular area and then move on somewhere else. I entered this version in…
taken @ rocky bay in co. cork on a very rare (and beautiful) sunny day in Ireland this summer of 2008. The intertidal zone (also known as the foreshore) is the area that is exposed to the air at low tide and submerged at high tide, for example, the area between tide marks. This area can include many different types of habitats, including steep rocky cliffs, sandy beaches or vast mudflats. The area can be a narrow strip, as in Pacific islands that have only a narrow tidal range, or can…
The intertidal zone or “littoral zone” is the term used to describe the seashore which is covered during high tide and exposed during low tide, revealing a unique biome which survives under such fluctuating conditions.

Tidal Zones
While some of the species on the rocks surrounding the pools dip down into the "tidepool" itself, many species would not otherwise be able to live this high up in the intertidal without this pocket of water in the rocks. Deep pools like this one are great to observe for longer periods of time. Look for hermit crabs, tidepool sculpin and other marine life living amongst the plants. WADDEN SEA, Denmark, Germany & Netherlands: is an intertidal zone in the southeastern part of the North Sea. By the Early Oligocene, 34 to 28 million years ago, the emergence of Western and Central Europe had almost completely separated the North Sea from the Tethys Ocean, which gradually shrank to become the Mediterranean as Southern Europe and South West Asia became dry land. The Wadden Sea developed as a shallow body of water with tidal flats and wetlands rich in biological diversity.
