Gwen Thompkins writes about a silent eight-second film, recently discovered by the journalist James Karst, believed to show a smiling Louis Armstrong as a young teen-ager in New Orleans.

The wonderful Louis Armstrong was born today 8-4 in 1901. His inventive trumpet playing, scat singing, duos with so many of the famous singers through his years have left us with a rich arsenal of great 'Satchmo' songs. His charismatic stage presence was like no other - he was a unique gift to American music. He passed away in 1971 and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame.
