John Opie was the husband of the novelist Amelia Opie and painted this portrait of the future poet laureate in 1806. Southey visited Norwich on a number of occasions - staying with his friend William Taylor. He also visited the 'Devil's cucumber frame' aka the Octagon Chapel on Colegate. (Taylor taught German to George Borrow at the Norwich School.) Southey must have been a perceptive guy because he once said: "For society, of all places I have ever seen, Norwich is the best." Hear, hear.
