Oil on Canvas 24 x 31.5 in (2018) St. Lucy was an early Christian martyr under Diocletian. She is crowned with a wreath here in her glorified state because of her ultimate sacrifice (martyrs are often crowned in heaven). Also because she was said to wear a wreath lit with candles when bringing food to Christians in the catacombs. Here there are no candles because she is the source of the light. She holds a palm of victory and a plate with her eyes, which were removed during her execution…

St Lucy's Day Lussinatta took place on December 13. Lussi was a demon/witch who rode in the air with her followers called Lussiferda. Trolls and evil spirits and the dead where activeoutside and children who were bad could be taken away but Lussi who could sweep down the chimney and carry them away. If the family did not prepare for yule she would punish them. People stayed up all night to guard themselves from the evil lurking outside.
