Self-tapping screws have the ability to tap threads directly into surfaces. They are used for all sorts of material including wood, metal, and even brick. Depending on the hardness they may require a pilot hole to be pre-drilled before installation using a drill bit which is slightly smaller than the screw. The threads of the screw tap the metal or wood while the screw is being installed keeping the materials fastened together.
