a diagram of the human skeleton on paper

Science is one of those subjects, that we're on the fence when it comes to unschool or not to unschool. I generally like to follow the children's (or my own) interests into explorations and experiments, but I also like to keep an undercurrent of structured study going at the same time. To that end, last winter and spring, I had the children reading a science page a day from Dorling Kindersley's Knowledge Encyclopedia (known in our house as "The Great Big Book of Everything"), and then…

In this lesson, we will be learning about the inner workings of the skeletal and muscular systems by creating a paper model of a hand. The fingers will be bendable, and the movements will demonstrate how the bones and ligaments in our fingers move. The recommended age group for this project is 7-10, though all ages are welcome.

the model is made from materials that are attached to wires and paper with labels on them

This is a picture of a model of the muscular and skeletal system in the arm that I created last year and recently rediscovered! In it, I recreated the arm by using string, balloons, and straws to be the muscles, tendons and bones. When I blew into the straw on the top of the arm (the bicep), the balloon inflated which tightened the string around it which pulled the lower part of the arm up just like when the muscle contracts. It reminded me of the model from lab!

a skeleton with the words funny bone fact on it

🦴 The skeletal system is more than just some bones – it also includes your teeth, ligaments, and cartilage.⠀ ⠀ 🦴 In fact, contrary to popular Halloween costumes and decorations and cult classic movies, skeletons can’t move on their own. They’re not even responsible for moving in your body! That job goes to your brain, nerves, and muscles.⠀ ⠀ 🦴 And the fun doesn’t stop there! Did you know these other fun facts about bones? #healthybones #bonehealth #strongbones #bonefacts #humanbody
