During the Edo Period (1603-1868) in Japan, sumo wrestlers started to become known for their size. Part of their regime included eating this soup called chanko nabe and lots and lots of rice. There's no one recipe for chanko nabe, so feel free to use what's in season or what you like. This historical recipe from 1937 uses a dashi-miso broth with chicken, vegetables, and additions like shirataki noodles and abura age (fried tofu).
