These are first year plants and for those of you who haven’t grown raspberries and blackberries before, the first year is really about growing a strong root system, which means top growth is limited. But we are finally getting enough growth to reach the trellis panels. As shoots grow, I will continue to help them pop through the panels to keep them upright and save some space in the garden. I am expecting some wild growth next year as these have established well! And for those of you who are curious, purple sweet potatoes are planted on the edges of my raspberry bed - it was a great way to utilize the space while the berries established this year. This weekend my husband and I built a new trellis for our blackberry canes. Our original trellis was made from 2 landscape timbers with 8 foot of American wire stretched between the post. This lasted about 2 years before the canes pushed the wire forward and made the post lean in. This time we put up a T R E L L I S! We started with 3 eight foot 4 x 4 post.
